The Apprenticeship
By Kevin Gallagher, Samantha JoLee, and Marcus Sterner
(Author Adventures & Creative Composers)

In a city called Druned, there lived a girl with a very ambitious attitude named Sarah Schaffer.  She was 16 years old.  She worked in at the City Diner getting little pay.  Both her parents are deceased and she lives with her grandfather Mark.

“That’ll be 16.75 please,” said Sarah.
“Ok,” said the customer, “By the way did you hear Magician Jared is-“
Then at that moment, the wall seemed to shatter like glass.

She faints, while she regains her composure a tall handsome figure who she knows him as Magician Jared.  Now he’s raising his staff and kills an earth demon.  When he finished, Sarah congratulated him and said, “Great job, I wish I could do that.”  But Jared said, “You can’t because you’re not a born magician.”

Sarah stormed home mad at the magician.  When she got home her grandfather asked what was the matter.  She told him the story.  “Well,” said her grandfather, “maybe he doesn’t know that you have power, maybe you should prove to him your talents.” Apparently, she took this the wrong way, because the next day she skipped her job to prove her talents.

She sneaked behind building after building watching Jared and suddenly an earth demon appeared and she tried to kill it and failed and Magician Jared saves her and realized her talent and told her she could fight with him.

She was filled with joy and happiness.  The next day she was riding a hover board that was supplied by Jared.  After she’s been riding for about 45 minutes she spots an earth demon and magician Jared tells her what to do and when she dose she kills the earth demon and is so happy.

So she keeps killing these but suddenly she felt the ground shake and a Manti Cora appears.  The Manti Cora is the fiercest beast known.  It stands at 20 ft. high.  It has the head of a lioness, the body of a human, and the claws and wings of a dragon.  Its power is increased even more with its scorpion like tail. “Well, here goes nothin’,” says Magician Jared sarcastically.

They started to fight the mighty beast and was just about to kill and then Sarah jumped and hit it I the head and it died and they lived happily ever after.

Swimmers Live For

By Haley Lynott (Wanna-Be Writers)

Swimmers live for …
The 5:30 a.m. practices that seem to last forever
Waking up extremely early to go to a championship meet
Getting pushed by all of your coaches
Going in the water even though you know its freezing
Diving off the blocks to do a long set after a hard practice
Getting first in their heat or age group
Their caps and goggles that always seem to some off or break at the worst time
Making Junior Olympics by a millionth of a second
Beating their best time in their stroke
Getting first in a relay so you can get that extra point to win the meet
Getting first in the season
Wishing teammates good luck before a big swim meet
Doing a 400 butterfly because you breathed on your first stroke even though you were told not to
But most of all, swimmers live for …
Their love for swimming

A World of its Own
By Samir Lakhani (Wanna-Be Writers)

When I step onto that court, a world has erupted.
When I step onto that court, nothing else matters.
When the florescent green ball comes to me focus and determination run through my mind.
Sweat dripping from my famished face like its pouring.
The sweat on my dry and tense hand loosens the grip on my racket.
Mind and body merge together as one, each having the answer to each others difficulties.
Feet pounding the floor like a devastating earthquake.
When I win that point I feel as I have invented the light bulb.
I just have to do it again.
When I step off that court, Post Mortems tell me I must improve.
When I step off that court, win or lose: fun is the only thing that matters.

Summer Friends

By Erika Dickson (Wanna-Be Writers)

The phrase “Never judge a book by its cover” never really meant anything to me until last summer.

It was the last day of school, and it was hot! Whenever I closed a part of my body, for example elbows or knees they would get disgustingly sweaty. It was just nasty. Kids were passing out and desks were melting. Okay, desks weren’t actually melting but that would make this story a whole lot more interesting right? Right. We all just wanted out. But we didn’t get it until after it felt like the result of global warming after billions of years. After what felt like an eternity, my best friend Jess and I were finally walking home.

When I say best friend I really mean best friend. Our mother’s were best friends before we were born, which has always made us even closer. We have had millions of fights, but we always repair our friendship, which is the sign of being true best friends with someone. We’re also neighbors so we practically live at each other’s house. Jess has a pool and I have an extra bed in my room because of my sister Deanna. She’s seven years older than me so she’s been going to college for a while now. She goes to Brown University, way over in Rhode Island, and is getting her degree in biology and physics and stuff like that. She wants to be a scientist and I expect that will happen. So anyway, Jess and I usually spend our summer days at her house and nights at my house. We have a huge TV in my basement so we usually stay up late watching stupid movies like Charlie’s Angels and Legally Blonde. We love them, and watch them all the time.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Jess and I were watching TV at her house. We were watching Jerry Springer, a show that everybody hates but keeps watching anyway. We we’re in the middle of laughing at some woman going through her mid-life crisis, when a commercial came on. So, Jess flicked the channel to 20. Or at least tried to. But being the spaz that she is she changed it to channel 2 instead, the local news station. There was a commercial on here too except this one wasn’t about oxy-clean.

I knew I was going to have a pretty boring summer because Jess was spending the whole summer in California with some of her relatives. She felt bad leaving stuck up here in Washington the whole summer, but I couldn’t blame her. I’ve been looking for a sort of replacement friend for the summer. So far, I only had the new girl down the street named Nicole. I hadn’t really talked to her at all yet but who’s to say we couldn’t be friends. Well maybe her other friends. Even though she just moved here in March, she’s already pretty close with the preppy, cheerleader type, and they hate girls like me and Jess. But it isn’t like the feeling isn’t mutual.

Sadly, after another two weeks jess was gone and Nicole was still my only option. So I made my way across the street, and rang the doorbell. Her mom answered, so I asked her if Nicole was around. She gave a quick smile and yelled for Nicole. Then someone came down the stairs. This someone could not, would not be Nicole. Her hair was up in a messy ponytail, which I never seen her wear. This and the combination of her outfit (XL ACDC t-shirt with gray sweatpants) left me dumbfounded.

“Lacey?” questioned Nicole.

“Hi,” I managed with a smile.

Her face looked as though I just took a picture of her and threatened to post it all over the school website. I thought this experience was weird for me, but I could imagine how embarrassing it was for her. I took a moment to take in the real Nicole. No manicures or new French hairstyles. No designer clothes and purses. Just a regular person, like me and Jess. I should have gotten the Nobel Prize for this discovery. Not, that I would ever share this with anyone. It’d be too hard to explain for both of us. Right now I felt pretty stylish with my jeans and “Deal with it” tee. I had spent the whole week watching MTV and VH1’s video countdown, so at least we would have something to talk about. It looked like Nicole could just be a regular person, but looks can be deceiving.

“Um, do you wanta come over to my house to swim?” I asked anxiously.

“Yeah, just let me go get into my swimsuit,” Nicole replied nervously.

Once she left to go get changed her mom started to chat with me.

“I’m so glad you’ve invited our little Nicole out with you. She hasn’t gone anywhere this summer. Now at least she’ll have some social activity. I’ve never heard her mention your name before though?” Mrs. Freedman babbled.

“Well, um, we never really hung out at school that much” I responded.

I was tempted to say that the reason I’m not mentioned is because she’s one of the people who treats me Jess and I like dirt just because we’re not into the stuff that they are. But her mom might have a cardiac arrest, so I left that subject alone.

Soon after that, Nicole came out in a simple one- piece. “Wow,” I thought. Maybe she isn’t like all her friends. Maybe we could be friends. That was a thought.

The walk back over to my house was kind of awkward. We used the usual “how was your summer”, but that only takes you so far. Then, we saw two little kid bouncing a big plastic ball. One kid bounced the ball and it hit the other little kid in the face. We both started laughing. That was the kind of icebreaker we needed. After that, we started talking, and realized we had a lot of things in common. It turns out, all her friends are away too with relatives, so there was never fear of running into her other friends. It was awesome.

Throughout the rest of the summer we were always together. We went to movies and the mall and salons and stuff she liked, but we also went swimming, hiking, and biking, things I liked. Time was going by so fast, and it felt like we always were best friends. The end of summer came very fast. We never talked about what we would act like once we got back to school. But, I knew her friends would never approve of me.

One day we were floating in the pool talking and laughing when Nicole brought up a serious subject.

“I don’t think this is going to work during school,” she commented.

I wasn’t in the least bit offended. We both knew that our friends would not get along no matter what we did.

“I know,” I responded.

When school started we both went our separate ways. We never really talked or even said hi, so we wouldn’t have to give an explanation for it. But when summer came again, we knew we would be the best of friends. It was a comforting thought.

I seems strange to me that two friends can’t even say hello to each other for fear of being judged, or kicked out of their social group. It’s sad that that’s the way it is at our school. But, at least I got to know the real Nicole, and learned that people aren’t always as they seem, or act like on the outside.

Ebony Rain
By Alison Verna (Wanna-Be Writers)

This heavy afternoon [laden with
broken secrets and (silent) rain]
tastes of lightning from heaven,
because you are far away.

I can sense the aftertaste of yesterday,
tainting the pallid essence of today
like my memories of you.

You have left me empty inside, plagued
with an [unwelcome] numbness
slowly eating away at everything
left to hurt, and now I have become
so tasteless and cold.

The world balances on this moment,
on your last poisoned kiss before you
walked away, leaving me painfully alone
as my world collapsed around me
with a whisper and a sigh.

This shadow-kissed evening smells
of rain that has not yet fallen, of
the empty spaces where the sun
refuses to sleep.

As the world closes tired eyes
to this lullaby of ebony rain
that still falls, to the whispers of this
[broken] silence, full of holes,
the nonchalant world moves on,
as if you were still here to love me.

Sleepy is white.
It smells like flowers. It tastes like lamb chops.
It sounds like ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
It feels like fluffy marshmallows.
It looks like clouds.
Sleepy is taking a nap.
Sleepy is white.

Show and Tell
By Richard Wang (Author Adventures)

I brought my rock collection to show and tell at writing camp. I have quartz, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and gold stone. Quartz is whitish and you use it to write on another rock there would be white streaks on that rock. Rubies are red and if you use them to put on rocks they would make red streaks. Emeralds look green and they look cool in the dark because it sort of glows. Sapphires are blue and they glow green in the dark. Gold stone is sparkly and it has gold steaks on it.

I got my rock collection from my mom; she gave me an egg holder for my collection. Then I went outside and looked for rocks. First I found concrete. It was black and white. Then I found sandstone; it was sandy. Then I started to hunt.

The Things I liked about Writing Camp
By Madison Zeky (Author Adventures)

I liked to go to the computer lab at writing camp because I like the computers and because I got to write stories. The thing that I enjoyed the most was having snack time because I got to eat food. I liked writing in the classroom. One thing I liked was being with my friends. I liked watching movies. My favorite movie was about the whales. What I liked to do was color different kind of things and got to spin it around to make different words. I like to color the flowers because you got to read the words on it. The only thing that I don’t like about the writing camp is because I have to wake up early every morning. I liked the way my teacher taught us. I made new friends while I was in camp. I learned how to type on the computer better. I liked the way Jennifer and Caitlin helped us while we were in the camp. I wish to come back next year.
