Starburst
By Amelia
Food Fanatics

Today I ate a starburst, a lovely cherry starburst. It was a little red square and was folded very nicely. It went “crinkle” and ‘rip” when I unwrapped it. It was really quite sticky and it felt gooey, smooth, and squishy. When I put it in my mouth, it was sour and tangy, but then it turned sweet. It was chewy, it was gooey, and it was really very fruity. It smelled of cherry on a hot summer day. Then my teacher have me three more and I ate them quite contently.

Phoenix Falling
By Jasmine
Wanna-Be Writers (Fogelsville)

The phoenix soars above the sloping hills,
Flying wherever it wills.

Although it burns with fiery embers from within,
From the eyes of men it stays hidden.

A thing of legend it has become, Except to some.

The phoenix no longer rises,
Instead it falls.

As the light inside is extinguished,
Its death goes unnoticed.

The last of its race,
The morning sun it never will again face.

Mourn the death of beauty and light,
And turn to face the darkest night.

Nolia watched the sky as she sat on the forest floor in a small clearing, away from the leaves and tree branches that would obscure her vision. She swatted the bugs that bit her. She was watching the sky for something she thought she had seen. She saw a bird caught aflame with fire streak across the night sky. It flew sporadically over the trees as if it was wounded. Then she lost sight of it again…

Congratulations on achieving straight A’s! Unfortunately, as your teacher, I feel it is my duty to inform you that I am a bit worried about your social life. I have noticed that you are very quiet and tend to speak only to your dear friend Dabney Carr. Though this is a good age to have many friends, in light of your exceedingly exceptional grades, I shall let this go for now, in the hope that you will soon reconcile your social ability.

Hide-And-Go-Boo
By Simon, Grade 3
Entertainment Writers

One time, Elmo, Dora, Boots, and Robin all wanted to play Hide-And-Go-Boo. First, Dora hid behind a rock and Boots hid behind a tree near Dora. Robin hid behind a bush. Elmo didn’t watch them hide. Then Elmo started counting.

When Elmo finished counting, he found Dora, and he also found Boots, since Boots was near Dora. Then they carefully looked for robin.

Robin was behind a bush and spotted Dora, Boots, and Elmo, but they didn’t see him. Then Robin jumped out and said, “Boo!” and scared them. They all said, “Good game!” and stared telling jokes.

I used to have curly hair
Now I have straighter hair
I used to be scared of the monster in my closet
Now I’m scared of spiders
I used to think Barbies were alive
Now I know that they’re just plastic
I used to think I was a princess
Now I know I’m nothing near royalty
I used to think clouds were made of cotton candy
Now I know they are just water vapor
I used to be 3
Now I’m 13
